DNA fingerprinting makes it possible to identify individuals using hair, blood, semen or other biological samples based on unique patterns (polymorphisms) in their DNA. It can be done by whole genome sequencing at the discovery stage and/or by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP, detection of multiple DNA restriction fragments by PCR amplification) for a larger number of samples.
