RNA sequencing is a sensitive and accurate method for determining the primary sequence and relative abundance of all RNA molecules. It provides strand-specific information that allows transcripts to be assigned to the corresponding DNA strand.

Typical applications are differential gene expression, allele-specific gene expression, fusion transcripts, de novo transcriptome assembly and genome annotation, and identification of single nucleotide variants.
